Location
Nestled among the trees at the foot of Great North Mountain is the small community of Orkney Springs. Since the days when guests came to the elegant and historic Orkney Springs hotel to take advantage of the healthful springs, the town has been a vacation getaway. Since the 1920’s the hotel and surrounding facilities have been owned by the Episcopal Diocese. Shrine Mont Camp and Conference Center is truly a “place apart,” where families can enjoy swimming in a spring-fed outdoor pool, playing tennis, biking, hiking the many trails, or relaxing on a rocker of the hotel porch. Well-known to music lovers, Orkney Springs is also home to the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. Inside the elegant four-story hotel are antique-filled parlors and lounges for music classes, a grand ballroom, bookstore, and dining room. Other highlights include an outdoor music pavilion, pond, and open space for playing and making music. Families are housed in the historical Maryland House, Pennsylvania House and cottages. The simple but comfortable rooms have private baths with showers, and the porches provide wonderful spaces for enjoying the outdoors. Evening activities bring the camp community together for student and faculty concerts, square and contra dancing, family talent show, and a campfire. Nearby attractions include Lake Laura, Bryce Ski Resort, Luray Caverns, Shenandoah National Park, and historic New Market.
